New regs on amateur radio operators
Michigan Senate Bill 493 amends the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act to place federal regulations on amateur radio operators (a.k.a. ham radio). Ham Radio is a two way non-commercial exchange used many times in emergency situations and is overseen by the Federal Communications Commission.
Under the new law, operators with antenna structures more than 200 feet above the ground or located near or at a public airports must notify the Federal Aviation Administration and register with the Federal Communications Commission. Upon compliance with these requirements, the law will allow antennas to be erected at heights and dimensions sufficient to accommodate radio service communications, and require local government regulation to reasonably accommodates such communications.
